CH.01 / 10CHELOMEI'S RIVAL BUREAU

A second Soviet space programme, competing with the first

While Sergei Korolev's bureau built the civilian Vostok, Soyuz, and eventually the DOS line that became Salyut, designer Vladimir Chelomei ran a rival design bureau — OKB-52, later TsKBM — pursuing its own military space station under a program called Almaz, Russian for "Diamond."

Almaz absorbed an earlier, cancelled military station concept called Soyuz-R, inheriting its place in the schedule and giving Chelomei's bureau a station core, later called OPS ("Orbital Piloted Station"), purpose-built for photographic and radar reconnaissance of the ground below.

CH.02 / 10AMERICA'S MIRROR IMAGE: MOL

The US had the same idea — and cancelled it first

The United States pursued an almost identical concept: the Manned Orbiting Laboratory, a crewed reconnaissance station disguised as a scientific mission. MOL never flew a single crew — cancelled in 1969 as automated spy satellites improved fast enough to make a crewed alternative hard to justify. Almaz kept going for another decade, becoming the only crewed military space station humanity has ever actually flown.

CH.03 / 10HIDDEN UNDER A CIVILIAN NAME

OPS-1, 2, and 3 — announced to the world as Salyut

Three Almaz stations flew between 1973 and 1976, internally designated OPS-1, OPS-2, and OPS-3. Each, the moment it reached orbit, was publicly renamed — becoming Salyut 2, Salyut 3, and Salyut 5 — folded into the numbering of the civilian program to hide that the Soviet Union was running two separate station lineages at once.

The deception held for decades — Almaz's true military nature, and the cannon aboard it, weren't confirmed publicly until the 1990s, after the Soviet Union itself had ceased to exist.

CH.05 / 10THE GUN IN ORBIT

The only weapon ever fired in space

Mounted on the forward belly of the station was a modified Nudelman-Rikhter aircraft cannon, adapted from a Soviet bomber's tail gun — designed to defend against interceptor satellites the Soviets feared the US might use to inspect or disable Almaz.

On January 24, 1975, with Salyut 3 flying uncrewed, ground controllers commanded a live test — firing the cannon at a target satellite between roughly 3,000 and 500 metres away. Cosmonauts later confirmed the target was destroyed. The station was deliberately deorbited the very next day, its purpose served.

CH.06 / 10SALYUT 2 — DEAD ON ARRIVAL

Disabled before a single crew reached it

OPS-1, launched April 3, 1973, suffered a serious malfunction and depressurisation within days of reaching orbit — likely damage from its own upper stage, though the exact cause remains debated. No crew ever boarded; the station tumbled and broke apart weeks later. It counts as the program's first flight and its first outright failure in the same breath.

CH.07 / 10SALYUT 3 & 5 — THE MISSIONS THAT WORKED

Three crews, eighty-one days total, in orbit for real reconnaissance

Salyut 3 (OPS-2) hosted Pavel Popovich and Yuri Artyukhin for fifteen days in July 1974, operating its reconnaissance cameras and returning exposed film to Earth in a small recoverable capsule. Salyut 5 (OPS-3) followed in 1976, hosting two crews — Soyuz 21 and Soyuz 24 — across 409 days in orbit, the most operationally mature of the three stations.

CH.08 / 10THE TKS SPACECRAFT THAT ALMOST WAS

A resupply ship designed for a mission it never flew

Almaz's original plan called for a purpose-built ferry, the TKS (Transport Supply Craft), carrying both cargo and crew in a reusable descent capsule called VA. In practice, Soyuz — already flight-proven for the civilian program — carried every Almaz crew instead, and TKS never flew crewed at all.

Four TKS spacecraft eventually flew uncrewed between 1977 and 1984 — not to an Almaz station, but docked instead to the civilian Salyut 6 and Salyut 7, delivering cargo and, in one case, military sensor payloads originally built for Almaz's cancelled fourth station.

A cancelled military program, quietly holding up the ISS

The TKS spacecraft's pressurised hull design became the direct ancestor of the FGB ("Functional Cargo Block") — the same lineage that produced the ISS's Zarya module and, decades later, the core of China's Tianhe. A weapon built to fight a space war that never happened ended up, indirectly, holding two later stations together.
