Sputnik 1's launch in October 1957 caught the United States by surprise and reordered its scientific priorities almost overnight. NASA was formed within a year, and Project Mercury — America's first human spaceflight program — became one of its very first acts, in October 1958.
By the time Mercury was ready to fly a man, the Soviet Union got there first: Yuri Gagarin orbited the Earth aboard Vostok 1 on April 12, 1961. Alan Shepard followed just three weeks later — not into orbit, but into space.
Chosen from 508 candidates
NASA required military test pilots under 40, under 5'11", with engineering training and jet experience — a shortlist that began at 508 names and ended, in April 1959, at seven.
Built to fail safely, not just to fly
Neither the Redstone nor the Atlas rocket was designed with a person in mind — both began as military missiles. Man-rating meant adding redundant systems, tighter quality control, and one entirely new component: a solid-fuel escape tower, mounted above the capsule, able to yank it clear of a failing rocket in a fraction of a second.
Small enough to wear, not board
At just 1.9 metres across, the Mercury capsule left barely any room to move — astronauts joked they didn't climb in, they put it on. Select a component.
Fifty-four hours, total
Every Mercury astronaut named their own capsule with a '7' in honour of the original seven. Scrub through the program.
Fifteen minutes against five hours
Shepard's flight proved a human could survive launch and weightlessness. Glenn's, nine months later, proved a human could survive an entire orbit — and the much hotter re-entry that came with it.
Two answers to the same problem
The Soviet Vostok capsule solved re-entry differently — its cosmonauts ejected and parachuted down separately from the spacecraft, a detail kept secret for years because it fell outside international records rules for a valid landing.
Blunt end forward, on purpose
Mercury's capsule shape was chosen specifically to create a shockwave that stood off from the heat shield, keeping the worst of re-entry heat away from the vehicle itself. Step through the sequence.
