A twentieth of Viking's price tag

By the mid-1990s, NASA administrator Dan Goldin was pushing a new mantra for planetary missions: faster, better, cheaper. Pathfinder became its flagship test case — a mission built in three years for about $485 million, against a cost equivalent to roughly $7 billion for the Viking program two decades earlier.

The budget forced radical thinking on every system — nowhere more than in how the spacecraft would actually touch down.

Cushions instead of legs and thrusters

Viking's landers had used precisely throttled retrorockets all the way to a soft touchdown — reliable, but heavy, complex, and expensive. Pathfinder's engineers proposed something that sounded almost reckless: wrap the lander in a cluster of giant airbags, fire a burst of solid rockets to nearly stop its fall in mid-air, then simply let it hit the ground and bounce.

No precision throttling, no legs to fail on uneven ground, and dramatically less mass than a full retrorocket system — a landing method that traded elegance for robustness and, above all, cost.

NASA's first viral mission

In 1997, the World Wide Web was still young, and Pathfinder's mission website became one of the biggest online events the internet had yet seen — millions of hits a day as new images and rover footage arrived from Mars in near-real time.

It was a preview of how future missions would connect with the public — not through press conferences alone, but through a website anyone could refresh, watching a robot's shadow creep across another planet almost as it happened.
