Ten chapters on the name the Soviet Union gave to two entirely different station programs at once — one civilian, one military — that survived a launch-day tragedy, a dead station brought back from the frozen dark, and became the direct ancestor of Mir and the ISS. Scroll to begin the mission.

CH.01 / 10TWO PROGRAMS WEARING ONE NAME

A civilian station and a spy station, indistinguishable from outside

Two competing Soviet design bureaus were building space stations at once: a civilian "DOS" line racing to beat America's Skylab into orbit, and a military reconnaissance line called Almaz, built around a powerful camera rather than a laboratory. A February 1970 decree merged their public identity — every station from either program, civilian or military, would be announced to the world as "Salyut."

The result is a numbering sequence that looks continuous from outside but hides two unrelated engineering lineages — Salyut 2, 3, and 5 were secretly Almaz military stations; Salyut 1, 4, 6, and 7 were the civilian DOS line.

CH.02 / 10SALYUT 1 — FIRST IN THE WORLD

The first space station, two years ahead of Skylab

Launched April 19, 1971, Salyut 1 became the first space station in history, orbiting at 200–222 km. Its first crew, Soyuz 10, failed to achieve a hard docking and had to return without boarding. Its second crew, Soyuz 11, succeeded — living aboard from June 7 to June 29, 1971, and setting a new endurance record.

CH.03 / 10SOYUZ 11 — THE ONLY DEATHS IN SPACE

A valve, a seal, and thirty seconds

Returning to Earth on June 30, 1971, cosmonauts Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev were killed when a cabin pressure-equalisation valve jolted open during module separation, venting their air into the vacuum of space in about thirty seconds. Without pressure suits — deemed unnecessary for the flight — none survived.

They remain, to this day, the only human beings ever to have died above the Kármán line — in space itself, rather than during launch or a lower-altitude re-entry accident. Every Soyuz crew since has worn a pressure suit for launch and landing.

CH.04 / 10REBUILDING, STATION BY STATION

Three failures before the program found its footing

The next several stations struggled: DOS-2 was destroyed in a launch failure in July 1972; the Almaz station later named Salyut 2 depressurised and was abandoned before any crew reached it; a third DOS station, publicly disguised as "Cosmos 557" to hide its failure, lost control before it could be crewed. Salyut 3, 4, and 5 followed with mixed but improving results through the mid-1970s, rebuilding confidence in the program one flight at a time.

CH.06 / 10SALYUT 6 — THE BREAKTHROUGH

Resupply changes what a station can be

Launched September 29, 1977, Salyut 6 was the first station whose two docking ports were actually used simultaneously — one for crewed Soyuz spacecraft, the other for uncrewed Progress cargo ships delivering food, fuel, and equipment. That single change let cosmonauts stay for months instead of weeks, resupplied rather than stranded with whatever they'd launched with.

It also enabled crew handovers — a new team could dock while a resident crew was still aboard, overlap for a few days, and swap places, keeping the station continuously staffed in a way no station had managed before. Salyut 6 also hosted the first "guest cosmonauts" from outside the Soviet Union.

CH.07 / 10SALYUT 7'S NEAR-DEATH AND RESURRECTION

Docking with a dead, silent, tumbling station

In February 1985, a power-system failure left Salyut 7 completely dead — no electricity, no heating, no radio contact, tumbling slowly through space with its interior frozen. No one had ever attempted to dock with, board, and revive a fully unresponsive space station before.

Cosmonauts Vladimir Dzhanibekov and Viktor Savinykh flew Soyuz T-13 to the tumbling wreck, matched its rotation entirely by eye with no automated docking aids, and forced their way aboard through a freezing, dark interior to begin restarting its systems one by one — an improvised rescue that succeeded and kept Salyut 7 flying for six more years.

CH.08 / 10THE INTERKOSMOS VISITORS

The first astronauts who were neither Soviet nor American

Starting with a Czechoslovak cosmonaut aboard Salyut 6 in 1978, the Interkosmos program flew guest cosmonauts from Poland, East Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary, Vietnam, Cuba, Mongolia, Romania, and beyond — turning Salyut into a genuinely international symbol years before Mir formalised the idea with the West.

Twenty years, seven stations, one straight line to the ISS

Mir's core module was internally designated DOS-7 — a direct descendant of the Salyut line. The ISS's Zvezda module, still flying today, was built from a hull originally intended as DOS-8.
