CH.01 / 10INDIA'S LONG GAME AT THE MOON

Orbit, then attempt to land, then land

Chandrayaan — Sanskrit for "moon craft" — unfolded as a deliberate, step-by-step campaign rather than a single leap: an orbiter first, to prove the basics; a combined orbiter-lander-rover next, to prove landing; and only on the third attempt, everything working together at once.

CH.02 / 10CHANDRAYAAN-1: THE WATER DISCOVERY

India's first Moon mission, and a genuine surprise

Launched in October 2008, Chandrayaan-1 carried NASA's Moon Mineralogy Mapper instrument, whose data provided some of the clearest evidence yet of water molecules bound into the lunar surface itself — not just ice in shadowed craters, but a thin, widespread layer across much of the Moon.

The mission also released a small Moon Impact Probe that deliberately crashed near the south pole, releasing a puff of dust for the orbiter to analyse — a first, tiny rehearsal for landings still fifteen years away. Overheating problems ended the mission early, in 2009, less than a year after launch.

CH.03 / 10CHANDRAYAAN-2: A SUCCESSFUL ORBITER, A CRASHED LANDER

Two out of three parts worked exactly as planned

Chandrayaan-2 launched in 2019 with three components: an orbiter, the Vikram lander, and the Pragyan rover tucked inside it. The orbiter reached lunar orbit successfully and remains active there today, still returning data years later.

Vikram's descent did not go the same way. A software issue during the final braking phase sent the lander off its planned trajectory, and it struck the surface hard enough to be destroyed, taking Pragyan down with it — a landing lost in the last few kilometres of a nearly 400,000-kilometre journey.

CH.04 / 10LEARNING FROM FAILURE

Rebuilding a lander to survive its own mistakes

Chandrayaan-3's lander was deliberately over-engineered against the specific failure that doomed its predecessor: more propellant margin, stronger and wider legs, additional sensors, and a landing zone widened considerably so the lander had more room for error if it drifted off course — a design philosophy built directly around one crash report.

CH.06 / 10THE LANDING — AUGUST 23, 2023

Fourth country to land, first to land this far south

Vikram separated from the propulsion module on August 17, 2023, and used the still-orbiting Chandrayaan-2 orbiter as a communication relay throughout its descent. Guided by a fully automatic landing system referencing pre-loaded surface maps, it touched down safely on August 23, 2023, making India the fourth country ever to achieve a soft lunar landing.

More significantly, it landed farther south than any spacecraft ever had — at roughly 70° south latitude, in the rugged highland terrain near the lunar south pole that every major lunar program is now targeting.

CH.08 / 10INTO THE LONG NIGHT, AND SILENCE

Put to sleep, never woken up

With no power source able to survive the roughly two-week lunar night's plunge to below −120°C, ISRO deliberately put both Vikram and Pragyan into sleep mode in early September 2023, hoping the electronics would revive when sunlight returned on September 22. Contact attempts on that date, and after, went unanswered — the cold had very likely damaged their batteries and electronics beyond recovery, closing out the mission exactly as planned for its active phase, if not for its silent one.

From landing, to roving, to bringing pieces home

ISRO is now developing Chandrayaan-4, planned as India's first robotic lunar sample-return mission, alongside LUPEX, a joint lunar rover mission being developed with Japan's space agency to search for ice near the south pole — all feeding into India's broader ambitions for crewed spaceflight under its Gaganyaan program.

A crash report that became a landing

Few space programs turn a public, well-documented failure into a successful mission just four years later. Chandrayaan-3's landing was less a single triumph than the visible payoff of treating Chandrayaan-2's crash as data rather than an ending.
