Bewilderment

Confusion that blocks action or decision — you don't know what to do next.

How it shows up

Bewilderment shows up when nothing quite adds up: a new city's transit map, a confusing official form, a sudden turn in a relationship. People may feel stuck, unsure where to begin, and reluctant to act for fear of making it worse. It can signal that one's usual maps do not apply. What sets it apart is that the confusion blocks action, rather than inviting playful puzzling.

How it differs from Perplexity

Perplexity is an intellectual puzzle that invites working it out; bewilderment is confusion that blocks action or decision.

Notice

When bewildered, notice whether the confusion is about what is happening or about what to do next.

Where it is felt

Felt most in the head, chest and face.

Based on Nummenmaa et al. (2014), bodily maps of emotions, and related research. The map shows where people report bodily sensation, on average; individual experience varies.
