Double Overhand Knot
Also called Barrel knot (two turns)
An overhand knot with one extra turn. It makes a rounder, bulkier stopper that will not pull through a hole an overhand slips through, and it grips hard.

Drag to turn the knot. Scroll or pinch to zoom.
- 1Run the working end along beside the standing part.
- 2Turn the end back on itself.
- 3Wrap it twice round the standing part, working back along it.
- 4Tuck the end back through the inside of both wraps, so it comes out past the turn.
- 5Pull the end and the standing part so the wraps close up into a neat barrel.
Arrow keys step through. Tags show whether the moving end passes over or under.
Use it for
- A stopper in thin cord, string or fishing line.
- Finishing the tail of another knot so it cannot work back.
- One half of the Double Fisherman’s Knot.
Watch out
- It jams. Once loaded it can be very hard to untie.
- Dress the turns so they lie side by side, not crossed.
Untying
Loosen it by pushing the turns apart with a spike, then work the end back out.
