Overhand Loop

Also called Overhand knot on a bight, Loop knot

An overhand knot tied in a doubled rope. The quickest fixed loop there is, but it jams and weakens the rope a lot.

  1. 1Double the end of the rope into a long bight. You tie with the doubled rope.
  2. 2Bring the bight round to make a loop, crossing the doubled standing part.
  3. 3Take it behind and up through the loop, as for an overhand knot.
  4. 4Pull the bight through to form the eye.
  5. 5Hold the eye and pull the standing part and the tail to set it.

Arrow keys step through. Tags show whether the moving end passes over or under.

Use it for

  • A quick loop in string, cord or fishing line.
  • A loop that will never need untying.

Watch out

  • It jams hard and is close to impossible to untie after a load.
  • Use the Figure-Eight Loop for anything important.

Untying

Usually you cannot after a load. If it was only lightly loaded, flex it hard and pick it apart.
