Slipped Overhand Knot
Also called Slip knot
An overhand knot finished with a bight instead of the end, so one pull on the short end releases it. A quick stopper you can take out again in a moment.

Drag to turn the knot. Scroll or pinch to zoom.
- 1Hold the standing part on the left. The working end does the moving.
- 2Bring the working end up and round to make a loop, crossing the standing part.
- 3Fold the end back on itself and push this bight, not the end, behind the standing part and up through the loop.
- 4Pull the bight and the standing part to tighten. Leave the short end free.
- 5To release, pull the short end.
Arrow keys step through. Tags show whether the moving end passes over or under.
Use it for
- A temporary stopper you expect to remove.
- Holding a coil, a bag neck or a bundle for a short while.
- Anywhere a plain overhand would jam and you need it out again.
Watch out
- A tug on the short end, or a snag, undoes it.
- It will not hold against a heavy or jerky load.
Untying
Pull the short end. The bight slides out and the knot falls apart.
