A line can only hold order: before, after, between. An environment can hold much more. It can hold states that coexist, relationships between them, constraints that rule some configurations out, trajectories that connect one state to another, possibilities not yet actual, a record we call memory, and a structure of dependency we call causality.
None of this requires abandoning sequence — causes still precede their effects. It requires only asking whether sequence is the whole story, or one axis within something larger. A coordinate system does not deny that "up" differs from "down"; it simply refuses to describe a position using only one of its axes.

This is not a claim that humans can communicate with the future. It is the far more modest and scientifically defensible observation that present actions alter the set of physically possible future states. A decision is an intervention in a system — and a system, in the ordinary sense used across physics and engineering, has initial conditions, constraints, possible trajectories, feedback, and consequences.
To act, then, is not to travel toward a fixed destination. It is to narrow, redirect, or open the space of what can happen next — to select among branches that were, a moment earlier, all still available.

If reality is understood as an environment of interacting systems, human beings are constantly building the settings in which future events become possible — through standards, rules, architecture, technology, culture, communication, infrastructure, and individual decisions.
A standard is usually described only as a limit: it says what may not be done. But the same standard is also generative — a shared voltage makes a plug interchangeable, a shared protocol lets two machines that have never met exchange information, a shared unit lets a measurement made in one place be trusted in another. The restriction and the possibility are the same object, seen from two directions.
What kind of environment do we create when we establish the conditions under which future events can occur?
