Lettering

Custom-drawn letterforms that function as an independent visual image rather than as reusable type.

In practice

Lettering is letters drawn for one specific use, as an image, rather than typed from a font. Each letter can be shaped to fit its neighbors and the space, so the same letter may take different forms within one word. Hand-painted shop signs, a book cover title drawn to curve around an illustration, and a custom script on a bottle label are all lettering.

Often confused with Typography

Typography arranges reusable letters from fonts; lettering draws custom letterforms for one piece, where each letter can be unique.

Try this

Hand-draw your name so it fills a rectangle exactly, reshaping letters to fit instead of typing it.
