Joy

A response to something appraised as good, moderate to high in activation, and tied to a specific moment rather than sustained.

pleasanthigh activation

How it shows up

Joy often comes in moments: good news, a reunion, a song that lands just right, a child laughing. It tends to lift posture and voice and invites sharing, play, or reaching out to others. Some researchers suggest positive feelings like joy broaden attention and help build social bonds over time, though that idea is still being tested. Joy is distinct for being tied to a particular moment rather than a lasting assessment of life.

How it differs from Happiness

Joy is a bright, moment-bound spike; happiness is a steadier sense that life overall is going well.

Notice

When a moment of joy arrives, notice whether you want to hold it alone or share it with someone.

Where it is felt

Felt most in the chest, face and whole body.

Based on Nummenmaa et al. (2014), bodily maps of emotions, and related research. The map shows where people report bodily sensation, on average; individual experience varies.
