Longing
A sustained wanting directed at something distant or unattainable, without Nostalgia's specific orientation to the past.
How it shows up
Longing can attach to a distant person, a place never visited, a different kind of life, or something hard to name. It often shows up as a persistent ache, daydreaming, or a restless pull toward elsewhere. It may reveal what someone values or misses most. Unlike nostalgia, it is not specifically about the past; its object can be in the future, far away, or simply out of reach.
How it differs from Nostalgia
Nostalgia looks back toward a fondly remembered past; longing reaches for something distant or unattainable, whatever its place in time.
Notice
Notice where your mind drifts when it is free to wander, and what it seems to be reaching for.
Where it is felt
Felt most in the chest, stomach and throat.
