Yearning

Longing's more intense, often bodily-felt register.

How it shows up

Yearning is longing turned up: aching for a person far away, a homeland, a child, a calling, or a life that feels just out of reach. Many people describe it as felt in the body, a pull or hollow in the chest. It can be painful and also clarifying, showing what matters most. Its greater intensity and physical quality are what separate it from the gentler, more diffuse ache of longing.

How it differs from Longing

Longing is a sustained wanting for something distant; yearning is its more intense, often bodily-felt form.

Notice

When yearning arises, notice where you feel it, and what it seems to be reaching toward.

Where it is felt

Felt most in the chest, stomach and throat.

Based on Nummenmaa et al. (2014), bodily maps of emotions, and related research. The map shows where people report bodily sensation, on average; individual experience varies.
