Asymmetry
Intentional imbalance resolved through the position and scale of unequal elements rather than mirrored correspondence.
In practice
Asymmetry gives up mirror sameness but still aims for a composition that feels settled. Unequal elements are balanced through position, size and weight: a large photo on the left of a magazine spread can be offset by a small, dense block of text and a strong color patch near the right edge. Asymmetric layouts tend to feel more active than symmetric ones and often allow a clearer reading path.
Often confused with imbalance
Asymmetry is deliberate and resolved, so the unequal parts still feel stable together; imbalance is when a composition simply feels as if it might tip over.
Try this
Arrange one large and three small paper squares off-center on a page until the whole feels stable without mirroring.
