Repetition

Identical elements recurring at even intervals — the simpler, unvaried base case that Rhythm builds variation on top of.

In practice

Repetition places the same element again and again at equal spacing, without change. It creates order, consistency and recognition: identical columns on a building facade, a row of the same star icon on a rating bar, or one logo printed over and over on wrapping paper. Because nothing varies, it reads as steady and calm, and it is the base on which rhythm and pattern are built.

Often confused with Rhythm

Repetition repeats identical elements evenly; rhythm adds controlled variation in spacing, size or form to create a tempo.

Try this

Draw a row of ten identical squares at even spacing and describe the feeling before changing anything.
