Grading (Career Grading)

A structured system defining professional levels, responsibilities, and skill growth within a discipline.

In practice

Career grading is a structured ladder of professional levels in a design team, such as junior, mid-level, senior and lead, each describing expected skills, responsibilities and scope of decisions. It helps designers see what growth looks like and helps managers make fair, consistent decisions about promotion and pay. A grade might state that a senior designer leads client presentations and mentors juniors.

Often confused with color grading

Career grading defines professional levels in a team; color grading is adjusting the color and tone of film footage or photos.
