Layout

The arrangement of text, images, and other elements within a design's available space.

In practice

Layout is the practical arrangement of text, images and other elements within a specific space, such as a magazine spread, a web page or a product label. It covers placement, sizing, spacing and reading order. A recipe page might put the photo on top, the ingredients in a narrow left column and numbered steps in a wider right column, so a cook can glance back quickly while working.

Often confused with Composition

Layout arranges content within a particular page or screen; composition is the broader principle of organizing any elements into a coherent whole.

Try this

Lay out one recipe as a single column and again in two columns, then test which is easier to follow.
