Rage

Anger at an intensity that overrides self-control.

How it shows up

Rage is anger that floods past the point of choice: shouting, slamming, or saying things one would not say on reflection. It can follow serious injustice, humiliation, or long-held strain finally breaking through. In rage, attention narrows sharply and the usual brakes stop working for a while. Many people describe it afterwards as having happened to them, which captures what sets it apart from ordinary, still-steerable anger.

How it differs from Anger

Anger can still be steered; rage is anger at an intensity that overrides self-control.

Notice

Looking back on moments of rage, notice the point at which choice seemed to slip away.

Where it is felt

Felt most in the chest, head and face.

Based on Nummenmaa et al. (2014), bodily maps of emotions, and related research. The map shows where people report bodily sensation, on average; individual experience varies.
