Unease

Anxiety's least cognitively elaborated cousin — a bodily signal felt before it is understood.

How it shows up

Unease is the faint sense that something is off before it can be named: walking into a quiet room, an email with an odd tone, a feeling about a deal. It tends to register in the body first, perhaps as tension or a slight churn, while the mind has not yet caught up. It may be an early warning from patterns noticed below awareness, though it can also misfire. Its low elaboration sets it apart.

How it differs from Anxiety

Unease is a faint bodily sense before any clear story; anxiety tends to be elaborated with worried thoughts about what might happen.

Notice

When something feels off, notice what your body registered before you had words for it.

Where it is felt

Felt most in the stomach, chest and throat.

Based on Nummenmaa et al. (2014), bodily maps of emotions, and related research. The map shows where people report bodily sensation, on average; individual experience varies.
